Like many other avid podcast listeners I have done my fair share of browsing, starting a podcast then switching it off because the story wasn’t interesting, their voice annoyed me or their approach seemed off. I have grown to be somewhat of a connoisseur when it comes to knowing whether or not a podcast will suit my very specific niche. While I certainly listen to many podcasts because I like the person presenting, follow their life or want to hear all the goss, there are other podcasts I simply love because they tell a damn good story. Crime Junkie is one of them. I promise you this is not an ad for Crime Junkie, but hey if Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat want to slide into my DMs then by all means! Here are the 5 reasons I love Crime Junkie and why you will too.

1. The Storytelling

The way these true crimes are unfolded to the audience is as if we are having our very own conversation with Ashley and Brit. The story is told in such a captivating manner you almost feel like it is happening right in that very moment. Each event, day and moment within the investigation and crime itself is told in a manner that makes chronological sense and is easy to follow. What I truly love about the way they tell these true stories is their back and forth banter and questioning with one another. As soon as Ashley even mentions that the family went to the police straight away to try put in a missing person report, we know for a fact Brit is going to be up in arms about the 24hour “rule”. If you are a lover of a good story and a detective case, then you will love Crime Junkie.

2. The Production Value

FULL BODY CHILLS. This is how I feel every time I really listen in to the production skill put into the background sound effects, the suspense, the hours of research and editing and don’t even get me started on the incredible intro music… If you don’t have your own choreographed dance for every time it plays, then I am not sure you are even a true Crime Junkie. Seriously though, the time and effort put into each and every episode is incredible and really makes you feel as though you are listening to something with craft and insane skill, as well as a true-crime story. Even the slight creak of a door, footsteps on leaves or the sound of running, elevates the story ten-fold. Above all, I have so much respect for the research hours that must go into gathering information on these cases and then on top of that, managing to tell it in a chronological and understandable way. Applauds all around from me.

3. Their Fight for Justice

Crime Junkie’s fight for justice, and bringing awareness to cases that have long been forgotten by the broader community, is one of the main reasons I love what they do so much. They are always sharing the history of the victim, what they loved, who their family was and all the reasons why we need to help find justice for them. With over half a million Instagram followers and over 2million listeners a week, this platform is helping spread the stories and unsolved cases with the world in the hope for justice. You never know when you might be able to help with a case and bring closure to a family. Crime Junkie puts their money where their mouth is. They support numerous organizations in order to help them continue their work for justice.

4. The Community

If I had a nickel for every time they said full-body chills or Be weird. Be rude. Stay alive I might well be a millionaire, but it is this exact reason I love the podcast so much. Not only have they created something I look forward to every single week, but they have created a community of people wanting to seek justice for victims and share a love for true-crime. I must commend Ashley and Brit and co for their insane commitment to creating more than just a podcast. They have created a strong following, community and loyal weekly listeners who are dying to hear the intro to another new episode.

5. The True-Crime

Why isn’t this at the top of the list you might ask? Not everyone loves true-crime, I know that for sure, but there is something so captivating about listening to a true-crime story and trying to figure out in your own mind who might have done such a thing. Each story told gives me a new understanding of how the other half might be thinking which could seriously save my life one day. Not being dramatic, but you never know when your life could cross paths with a serial killer’s. This podcast has taught me; the importance of knowing it is NEVER too early to raise alarm about someone missing, the small details could sometimes save a life or bring justice, it is always okay to be weird, be rude and stay alive. I promise you that even if you think you don’t like listening to true crime, you will after listening to Crime Junkie.

While I might sound like a completely crazed Crime Junkie-Junkie, I wanted to share a podcast I have loved so much with anyone who hasn’t yet been exposed (damn you are lucky with how many episodes you have to binge…). What better time to start a binge than now.

Just remember to always: Be weird. Be rude. Stay alive.
