What can we focus on in these 5 days…

As of 12:30 pm, the Perth Metropol, Peel and South-West regions of Western Australia were informed we will be put into a 5-day lockdown starting tonight at 6 PM and ending on Friday at 6 PM. This lockdown is due to a case of community transmission of Covid-19 to a security guard working at one of the hotel quarantine locations.

This 5-day lockdown means all non-essential services will be shut and we are only allowed to leave our house, with a mask on, for four reasons. The four reasons are as follows;

  1. Shopping for essentials like groceries, medicine and necessary supplies.
  2. Medical or healthcare needs, including compassionate requirements and looking after the vulnerable.
  3. Exercise within their neighbourhood, but only with one other person and only for one hour per day.
  4. Work, where you cannot work from home or remotely.

Please follow all rules and restrictions put in place, they are in place for a reason and it’s to keep us safe. Treat those around you with respect and kindness and don’t take the stress of this situation out on the essential workers, they are there to help and support us, be nice to them. It’s the least we can do.

While this lockdown comes as quite a shock to the Western Australian community, as we have managed almost 10 months without community transmission, it feels as though we will go to the strongest measures possible to make sure Covid-19 isn’t spreading within our state.

On a personal note, this lockdown came as quite a shock. My work week coming up, which I was excited about, involved travelling out of my region multiple times and now this will all have to be cancelled. As a freelancer, it’s extremely hard to take the blow of work getting cancelled, and I am certainly not the only one in this position. Instead of focusing on the negative of this short lockdown, I am urging myself and others to focus on the positives.

What to focus on

  • We live in a state that takes strong action against fighting this virus.
  • Our leaders are willing to establish difficult measures to see results.
  • Our community has been fortunate enough to have almost 10 months of “normal” life — we can get through 5 days!
  • This time may allow you to focus on something you previously wouldn’t have time for.
  • Each day we follow these restrictions, is a day closer to living normally again.
  • Do small things each day that make you happy; an at home workout, going out for a walk (with a mask on), Face-timing family members, writing, reading, relaxing, watching a new show, cooking healthy food, playing a board game etc.
  • This is short term pain for long term gain.

While this is certainly not an ideal situation for anyone, I am hoping that we can truly show the country the power of our Western Australian spirit to come together and beat this virus. Use these 5 days to focus on yourself, those around you and to be grateful that we have a government willing to put in such hard restrictions to keep us safe.

“Take life day by day and be grateful for the little things. Don’t get caught up in what you can’t control, accept it and make the best of it.”
